Sustainability of Leather & Allied Industries-
Sustainability today is an important issue for the leather sector. This encompasses both ecological and environmental factors, while keeping the consumer benefit as paramount. Leather sector is innovating by way of developing new products, chemical systems and reducing energy consumption, while maximizing raw material to leather/product turnover. 51st LERIG would introduce the state-of-art concepts in this area that Indian leather sector could consider for adoption.
CSIR-Central Leather Research Institute (CSIR-CLRI) was founded with its maiden mandate to provide education and training with technological support to leather and allied sectors. The institution has gained excellence in enhancing and dissemination of technological competence and remained as an advanced education and training hub in leather technology. CSIR-CLRI had been one of the apex bodies in directing the growth of Indian Leather sector. Today CSIR-CLRI plays vital role in leveraging the growth of Leather sector in several countries especially in African continent through institutional and technological capacity building programmes.
Organized every year during the last week of January, Leather Research Industry Get-Together (LERIG) marks the beginning of the Leather week celebrations. LERIG is organized by CSIR-CLRI in association with the stakeholders of the leather sector including Council for Leather Exports, Leather and Leather Products Trade Bodies and Associations with active support from CSIR Network Partners, Institutions and Universities. This annual event aims to provide a platform to deliberate the ideas and concerns of common interest and to evolve a comprehensive strategy for enabling an internationally competitive Leather Sector.
